For February-March billing cycle: Visayan Electric cuts power rates

CEBU, Philippines — Residential consumers of Visayan Electric can expect a decrease in their electricity bills this February to March billing cycle, as the power distributor announces a rate reduction of P0.13 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This adjustment brings the overall rate down to P11.13/kWh.
“This means a household consuming 200 kWh can expect savings of at least P26 on their electricity bill,” Visayan Electric said in a statement.
The power firm explained that while transmission charges have increased due to ancillary services, the average residential rates were offset by lower electricity prices at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), where power is bought and traded.
Another factor contributing to the rate decrease is the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) Resolution No. 18, Series of 2024, which mandates electric utilities, including Visayan Electric, to issue a one-time refund of P0.1101/kWh from previously collected but unutilized Regulatory Reset Experts Cost.
Starting February 2025, Visayan Electric will also discontinue the collection of the Regulatory Experts Cost, resulting in a minor reduction of P0.0011 in monthly bills moving forward.
Despite the rate reduction, Visayan Electric reminded consumers to remain cautious about their electricity usage.
“As we approach the warmer summer months, it’s important to practice energy conservation,” advised Visayan Electric President and Chief Operating Officer Raul Lucero.
Lucero noted that higher temperatures typically lead to increased electricity consumption, especially due to the extended use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners and electric fans.
To help consumers manage their electricity bills, Visayan Electric encouraged the adoption of simple yet effective energy-saving practices, including unplugging appliances when not in use, using energy-efficient LED bulbs, and maximizing natural light during the day to minimize the need for artificial lighting.
By incorporating these habits, households can further reduce electricity expenses while promoting sustainable energy use, the company added. — (FREEMAN)
