Mandaue BPLO hits P1 bilyong target

Kristin De Dios - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Mandaue City's Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO) announced it has reached its expected target of ?1 billion from the renewal of business permits and licenses in the month of January.

Yesterday, January 31, was the last day for business owners in the city to apply for or renew their licenses and business permits.

According to BPLO Inspection Division Head, Atty. Walter Shane Lumbre, they reached their quota since January 28, 2025.

“Mao na ang atoang gi -target for renewal period and so far, ni exceed pa,” said Lumbre.

He said that the renewal period is when the bulk of payments and collections for business taxes happen.

However, Lumbre said that there are still many business owners whose status is marked as "for payment” even in the last day of renewal.

Although, the BPLO reached its quota for the renewal period, only about 2,000 establishments in the city have paid so far.

Currently, there are at least 16,000 active business establishments in Mandaue City.

He said that they were still able to collect more than ?1 billion, as the early payers are those large companies holding businesses in the city.

Lumbre added that entrepreneurs who fail to pay their permits and licenses will incur penalties, including a 25 percent surcharge and an additional 2 percent interest per month for any further delays.

He said that big establishments are the ones most concerned because the penalties for late payments would be too large for them to handle, which is why they make sure to pay early.

“Ang 25 percent dako na man na sa ilaha, they made sure for this month nga mabayaran gyud nila kay dili sila ganahan maka-incur ana,” Lumbre said, adding that most of the time, these companies are the ones that have been helping the BPLO reached its quota because they pay huge amount of business taxes.

On February 3, the BPLO will begin releasing business permits to entrepreneurs.

“We made sure nga ma-process sa tanan ang business permit renewal applications to avoid penalties,” said Lumbre.

He said the release of permits will continue in February, including inspections for the posting and display of 2025 business permits, as required by law.

This inspection aims to verify if business establishments have indeed renewed their business permits.

He also added that the inspection will check if they have complied with the necessary regulatory clearances and supplementary licenses required based on the nature of their business.

“Kung kailangan sila mag-renew, need sad nila i-display sa conspicuous place sa ilahang business establishments,” said Lumbre. (CEBU NEWS)
