CEBU, Philippines — Former congresswoman Clavel Asas Martinez passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the age of 82.
Martinez’s passing was confirmed by her daughter, Bogo City Vice Mayor Maria Cielo "Mayel" Martinez, through a social media post. While the family requested privacy to grieve,
the vice mayor announced that a viewing service would be held from January 20 to 25 at the Cosmopolitan Funeral Homes in Nivel Hills, Lahug, Cebu City.
The Cebu Provincial Board has approved a resolution expressing profound sympathies and sorrow for the loss of the former Provincial Board Member and matriarch of the Martinez clan from Bogo City, northern Cebu.
"The Martinez clan and the rest of Cebu mourn the loss of a former Cebu Provincial Board Member and Congresswoman," the resolution stated.
Martinez served as Representative for Cebu’s Fourth District from 1998 to 2007. As a former member of the Body, the Provincial Board recognized her invaluable contributions, emphasizing the special place she held in Cebu’s history and public service.
"Her death leaves a void in the hearts of her family, relatives, and friends, both in and out of politics and public service," the resolution added.
The Board also extended their deepest condolences to the Martinez family, particularly her son, incumbent Cebu Provincial Board Member Celestino “Tining” Martinez III.
The resolution, authored by Provincial Board Member Glenn Anthony Soco, was adopted and approved en masse on Monday, January 21. — (FREEMAN)
