CNU secures nearly ?2 billion for modernization projects

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu Normal University (CNU) has achieved a significant milestone in its efforts to enhance the learning environment for students, securing nearly ?2 billion in funding for modernization projects and state-of-the-art technology initiatives.

In his first Annual True State of the University Address (ATSUA), CNU President Dr. Daniel Ariaso Sr. announced that his administration has successfully delivered ?1,946,696,250 in funding.

Specifically, ?998 million has been allocated for the university’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) modernization development program, while ?947 million will be used in the construction of a centralized student smart hub.

"I'm proud that my administration has already delivered on that promise of funding allocation," said Ariaso.

The projects were approved by the CNU Board of Regents under Resolution No. 266 for the Smart Campus Project and Resolution No. 267 for the ICT Project, with both projects awarded to Lancaster Technology and Development Corporation (LTDC).

Ariaso noted that CNU is one of the few state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the country to secure lump sum funding of ?1.94 billion for modernization efforts, approved in 2024. He expressed his gratitude to Congress for its support in advancing the projects.

“We are now one step closer to really transforming our campuses into great smart ones,” Ariaso added.

As part of the ICT modernization project, the university will establish its first-ever RAM broadcasting radio station, backed by ?30 million in funding.

Meanwhile, the ?947-million centralized student smart hub officially broke ground yesterday, signaling the start of construction.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Dr. Ariaso, administrative officials, staff, students, and representatives from LTDC. The centralized smart hub will house technology-integrated facilities aimed at improving the delivery of quality education.

Ariaso highlighted that the smart hub will support hybrid learning by ensuring greater access to online educational materials and resources.

The modernization initiative also includes the procurement and distribution of gadgets to faculty and students. This includes 250 desktop computers, 280 laptops for faculty members, and 1,000 tablets for students.

“We vow to procure and distribute laptops to faculty members and students through the one-to-one ratio scheme… These were already procured last year, and the units are already for delivery earlier this year,” Ariaso stated.

Future learning modalities

As these projects progress, CNU is considering revising its current learning modalities. Ariaso shared plans to potentially request the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Board of Regents to implement either 50% or 100% online learning, depending on future educational demands.

In October 2024, CNU adopted a 75% onsite and 25% offsite class arrangement to ensure student safety.

The modernization projects aim to position CNU as a leading smart campus, fostering innovation and ensuring students have access to cutting-edge educational tools and facilities. (CEBU NEWS)
