DepEd partners with OceanX

CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) has formalized a strategic partnership with US-based ocean exploration initiative OceanX, marking a significant step toward expanding ocean education and fostering leadership among Filipino learners.

This collaboration, outlined in a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), will focus on science expeditions aboard the OceanXplorer research vessel, as well as related film and media projects.

As part of its 2025 science research expedition, OceanX is set to conduct in-port activations that will provide Filipino learners with hands-on learning experiences and valuable insights into marine science, ocean conservation, and research. These activities will help cultivate a deeper understanding of the critical work being done in the field.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara had the opportunity to tour the OceanXplorer, the world’s most advanced research and media vessel, during a visit to Manila South Port last year. This firsthand experience emphasized the innovative and immersive nature of the partnership, which promises to offer Filipino students unique learning opportunities.

In addition to the in-port activities, OceanX also runs two key programs aimed at empowering Filipino youth---the Young Explorers Program and the Early Career Explorers Program. The Young Explorers Program is designed for learners aged 18 to 24 and includes workshops, hands-on activities, and an independent study to build foundational knowledge in ocean science, marine operations, and digital media storytelling.

Meanwhile, the Early Career Explorers Program targets professionals under 25 with less than five years of experience, offering them a chance to collaborate with renowned faculty and peers to deepen their expertise in ocean exploration and advocacy.

DepEd announced that applications for both programs are now open. Interested participants can submit their applications via Young Explorers Program and Early Career Explorers Program.

Applicants must hold a valid passport through March 2026 and will be evaluated on a rolling basis. Travel expenses, including airfare, accommodations, and allowances, will be covered by OceanX.

This partnership underscores a growing commitment to ocean education and provides Filipino learners with valuable tools to contribute to marine science and conservation efforts globally. (CEBU NEWS)
