CEBU, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil’s term is likely to be extended as his mandatory retirement on February 7, 2025, nears.
Marbil, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1991, assumed the PNP's top post in April 2024 after being appointed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as the 30th PNP Chief. He succeeded Police General Benjamin Acorda Jr., whose term ended upon his retirement on March 31, 2024.
Despite serving less than a year in the role, Marbil’s tenure has been noted for his focus on law enforcement modernization and crime prevention initiatives, as highlighted by the Presidential Communications Office.
With the 2025 midterm elections fast approaching, President Marcos acknowledged the need for leadership stability in the PNP, especially during a critical election season.
“So, pinag-aaralan namin. But I think that is probably a very strong argument to keep him on, at the very least, until after the elections,” the President said during the launch of the Tesla Center in Taguig yesterday.
An extension of Marbil’s term would ensure continuity in leadership within the PNP as the organization plays a crucial role in maintaining peace and order during the election period.
Marbil is set to retire upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56, but the possibility of his extension highlights the government’s confidence in his leadership during this pivotal time.
