CEBU, Philippines —  There will be no classes in Cebu City as well as in several towns and cities in Cebu Province today.

Some local government units (LGUs), which declared cancelation of classes, though, have left it up to private schools whether to hold classes or not.

The suspension of classes today is aimed at giving time for students, performers and devotees the much-needed rest after celebrating the Fiesta Señor and the Sinulog grand parade over the weekend.

In Cebu City, Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia declared the suspension of classes during his speech at the opening of the Sinulog grand showdown at the Cebu City Sports Center.

“First announcement to make, tomorrow, Jan. 20, 2025, as mayor of the City of Cebu I hereby declare that there will be no classes tomorrow,” Garcia said.

The declaration of suspension of classes covered both public and private schools from elementary, secondary and collegiate levels, Garcia said.

Garcia, however, could only cancel classes and not employees' works as only the Malacañang can do such a declaration.

While classes are cancelled today, non-teaching personnel will still have to report to work, Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Supt. Nimfa Bongo told The Freeman. She would also be reporting for work today.

Since there is no classes today, Bongo said teachers are also not required to report to school.

In Cebu Province, several towns and cities have also declared suspension of classes to give time for its performers and devotees to rest.

Aside from Danao City, which first announced suspension of classes and work today, the cities of Carcar, Talisay, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu, and the towns of Carmen and Minglanilla have also announced the cancellation of classes.

These LGUs have contingents that joined the Sinulog grand parade yesterday.

In Mandaue, it's Public Information Office announced that classes in all levels for both public and private schools are suspended today.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard "Ahong" Chan also announced class cancellation in all levels in the city.

In Carcar, through its Sidlak Carcar, Sadya Carcar Facebook page, said that all levels in public and private schools are suspended.

For Talisay, Mayor Gerald Anthony "Samsam" Gullas in his Facebook post, announced face-to-face class suspension today to also allow the city's representatives to Sinulog to rest.

"Supposedly, ang no classes para raman unta sa mga performers but since I know sab nga dili rasad sila ang nisaulog sa maong fiesta, ato sad gi-consider ang mga pamilya ug mga higala nga namista sab kang Sto. Niño" Gullas said.

"As for the private schools and Talisay City College, it will be up to the school president or school head to decide if they will also have modular classes tomorrow" Gullas added, in his FB post yesterday.

In the town of Carmen, Mayor Carlo Villamor issued an executive order suspending the classes from pre-school, elementary to college.

But for the private schools, the decision to suspend the class is up to their school head.

As for the government worker, Villamor said the work will continue as the LGU needs to prepare for the upcoming Sinulog sa Carmen and Suroy-Suroy Sugbo Northern Escapade.

The Municipal Government of Minglanilla also declared suspension of classes in all levels of public schols. (CEBU NEWS)
