CEBU, Philippines — Despite admitting that he was present during the opening salvo for Sinulog's cultural events, dismissed mayor Michael Rama, who is also the Sinulog Foundation Incorporated (SFI) chairperson, said he is not yet certain whether he will be present during the grand celebration on Sunday, January 19.
In an interview with The Freeman yesterday, Rama said he would prefer not to detail his plans for the grand celebration at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC). He said he is now focusing on the religious activities for the Fiesta Señor and he wished to maintain its solemnity.
“That matter about Sunday, all I have been telling the people is for deep prayer, that all is well and ends well. That is the most important thing,” said Rama.
As for his functions as SFI chairperson, Rama did not provide a concrete answer, adding that he would prefer to discuss this after the Sinulog. He did not specify, which aspect he meant.
It was reported that Rama was not seen during the opening salvo for the cultural activities last January 10. In an interview with Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia on the same day, he told reporters that Rama was not sent an official invitation since it follows that an SFI member is automatically invited.
Rama said he attended the opening salvo but he opted not to join the Sinulog opening parade.
“There is no reason for me to join,” said Rama.
When asked if he was still involved in the overall preparations and planning for Sinulog 2025, Rama refused to answer, adding that he would address such matters after the Sinulog.
“Let the Sinulog and all Pit Señor be over, and then I will let you know ana,” said Rama.
In just a few days, the Sinulog 2025 grand celebration will take place at the CCSC.
Prior to this, the Cebu City Government announced that it is organizing a free concert at the CCSC on January 16, Thursday, where a large crowd is expected.
John Paul Gelasque, chief of the Department of Public Services (DPS), posted on the Cebu City Public Information Office page, reminded the public to be mindful of their garbage, acknowledging that it would be one of the challenges they will face.
To address this, he said, they have stationed multiple garbage bins around the CCSC, which has a crowd capacity of 15,000. — (FREEMAN)
