Garcia eyes liquor ban during Sinulog
CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia is considering imposing a liquor ban as part of the measures to ensure safety during the Sinulog 2025 celebration. The decision comes as preparations for the annual festival intensify, with local authorities aiming to balance public enjoyment with security concerns.
During the first coordination meeting for Sinulog 2025, held last Friday, Garcia discussed plans with law enforcement agencies, the Sinulog Foundation Incorporated (SFI), and other key stakeholders.
Garcia said he is set to issue an Executive Order (EO) to regulate the sale of alcoholic beverages and possibly implement a liquor ban during specific hours.
He, however, said that they are still gathering inputs from all committees and stakeholders, but he is more inclined to impose a liquor ban starting from 10 p.m.
In addition to the liquor ban, Garcia is also evaluating the possibility of banning or regulating street parties. While parties on private streets may be permitted, public street gatherings could face stricter controls, including a requirement for event permits.
Earlier, Councilor Philip Zafra, chair of the Committee on Peace and Order, suggested thorough coordination between organizers, city authorities, and police, instead of implementing a total street party ban. He also supported the liquor ban and dismissed the need for signal jamming during the festival.
According to Zafra, Sinulog is a celebration, and street parties are part of it, but they should be well-coordinated. He recommended for the Business Permits and Licensing Office to gather bar owners and brief them of their responsibility to strictly monitor activities at their establishments.
Garcia admitted that the Sinulog 2025 is anticipated to draw a larger crowd compared to previous years, making it one of the most challenging celebrations to manage.
The venue for the festival has been moved back to the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) from the South Road Properties (SRP).
"Dili mu mukumpyansa karon...because, as I've said, the venue has been changed from SRP to Cebu (City) Sports Center," said Garcia.
With just weeks to go, preparations are in full swing and organizers have confirmed the participation of 42 dancing contingents. (CEBU NEWS)
