3 dead, several injured in multiple road mishaps
CEBU, Philippines — Three people died and several were injured in three different road accidents in Cebu within two days.
In Brgy Tinaan, City of Naga, a 51-year-old motorcycle rider died last Saturday night after his vehicle hit a wing van, before it caught fire, trapping him by the flames.
Genolito Ramerez Ib-Ib of Cebu City was driving his motorcycle and had a head on collision with a wing wan driven by 49-year-old Teodoro Gador Matillano III, of Aguinaldo Street, Bais City, Negros Oriental.
Based on the investigation conducted by the Naga City Police Station (NCPS), Ib-Ib came from the town of San Fernando, Cebu going to Cebu City while Matillano came from Cebu City to San Fernando, Cebu.
However, upon reaching the national road, Ib-Ib reportedly encroached onto the lane of Mantillano resulting in the head on collision.
Due to the impact, police said that Ib-ib and his motorcycle were thrown away and his vehicle then exploded.
Ib-ib sustained burns all over his body and was immediately rushed to Vicente Mendiola Medical Center Infirmary Hospital of City of Naga for medical treatment but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
The wing van driver was brought to NCPS for proper disposition awaiting possible charges of reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property and homicide.
In another accident in Talisay City, one died and eight were injured when three vehicles- a motorcycle, a tricycle for hire and a multicab, figured in a road accident on Saturday night in Sitio Kuadra, Barangay Lagtang.
Based on the investigation of the City of Talisay-Traffic Operation Development Authority (CT-TODA) and the police, the multi-vehicle accident started with the multicab driven by Cabayles Reynaldo Cabilles, who was allegedly intoxicated with alcohol.
Cabilles reportedly attempted to overtake a motorcycle in front of him when he hit a motorcycle and a tricycle coming from the opposite direction.
In an interview with The Freeman, CT-TODA head Joy Tumulak said that the driver of the motorcycle that Cabilles hit, Hilario B. Delbo, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while his wife, Neriza Delbo, 47, was injured.
Tumulak further disclosed that tricycle for hire driver Pancho Jose Jessie Formento, a resident of Bulacao, Talisay City, together with his six passengers were also injured.
Cabilles was also hurt during the incident.
Meanwhile, a Cebu City policeman died and a traffic enforcer was injured in a road accident early morning on December 1, 2024 along Governor M. Cuenco Avenue corner J. Panis Street, in Cebu City.
The casualty was identified as Patrolman Carlo Tachado Bayato, 28, married and assigned at Abellana Police Station 2, Cebu City Police Office(CCPO).
Based on the investigation of the Traffic Enforcement Unit of CCPO, Bayato was driving his motorcycle when he reportedly hit 31-year-old traffic enforcer Cesar Silva, who was manning a fun run activity.
Because of the impact, Silva and Bayato fell on the ground, while the latter’s motorcycle was thrown a few meters away.
While both the policeman and the traffic enforcer were on the ground, a Sports Utility Vehicle driven by a 22-year-old female student from Barangay Budlaan, Cebu City did a left turn from I.T. Park bound to Talamban, Cebu City when the policeman was run over by the SUV.
Bayato was immediately rushed to Cebu City Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.
