Over 400 violators cited in “discipline zone” SRP

CEBU, Philippines — More than 400 citation tickets have been issued to traffic violators at the South Road Properties (SRP) for the month of November amid the implementation of discipline zone in the area.

The data provided by Councilor Rey Gealon, chairman of the SRP Board, shows that from November 5 to 24, 2024, a total of 479 citation tickets were issued. During the same period, 43 disabled vehicles were recorded on the SRP stretch, while at least 54 traffic accidents were responded to.

According to Gealon, most violations that led to citation tickets were due to vehicles having no headlights, defective headlights, no brake lights, defective brake lights, or disregarding traffic signs.

Other violations included driving without a driver's license or possessing an expired one. Violators were also recorded for not having registration records or for holding expired registration, as well as lacking side guard rails or clearance lights.

Gealon said that the enforcement by the SRP patrol team is in line with the mandate of Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia to implement a "discipline zone" along the roads at SRP, particularly along the coastal road.

He added that the 20-man SRP Patrol Group conducted a series of operations against violators of the Cebu City Ordinance 801, otherwise known as the "Traffic Code of Cebu City," as amended, and other related ordinances.

“A considerable number of violations were cited for erring motorists, including no headlights, no license plates, no brake lights, no driver’s license, no registration, overloading, unlawful riding, defective or dilapidated vehicle parts, and expired driver's licenses and registration,” he elaborated.

Aside from this, a total of 70 vehicles, mostly motorcycles, were impounded.

Gealon emphasized that strict enforcement is already in place regarding the use of the motorcycle lane, which is the outermost lane of the entire stretch of the coastal road.

“It is advised that drivers ensure their vehicles are roadworthy when passing through SRP, otherwise they will be flagged down,” said Gealon.

Previously, it was reported that in anticipation of busier streets at the SRP, the Cebu City government is forming a special task force exclusively for traffic management in the area. This task force will also be named the SRP Patrol Group. Among their primary tasks will be to directly manage traffic at the SRP. 

It can be remembered that when Gealon assumed the role of chairman of the SRP Board, one of his proposals was the establishment of a “Special Administrative Zone” where permits and licenses could be processed.

Gealon also mentioned that SRP should be declared a "discipline zone," where the speed limit must be maintained and motor vehicles must only move within their assigned lanes.

He added that towing operations should be in place, and traffic enforcers and marshals must patrol the coastal road to ensure better traffic management, as well as enforce order and cleanliness in the vicinity.   FPL (CEBU NEWS)
