CEBU, Philippines — The 329-member Lapu-Lapu City delegation will showcase the bravery and artistry of the Oponganons by bringing the “Kadaugan sa Mactan” to the people of Sorsogon in the invitational category of the 2024 Kasanggayahan National Festival of Festivals competition tomorrow.
“Today, we are honored to present to you the pride of Lapulapu City, as we bring to life the legendary "Kadaugan sa Mactan" or the Battle of Mactan,” said Tourism officer Garry Lao, who heads the delegation of Garbo sa Lapu-Lapu Festival,
The Oponganons arrived last October 12 ahead of the competition on October 16 to give ample time and regain energy from a long to Sorsogon.
Expectations are high on the Oponganons considering that they are only one of the two Cebu-based squads invited to the event. The other one being the multi-titled Lumad Basakanon, which represents the Sinulog Festival of Cebu City.
The Lumad Basakanon earlier said it is going to perform its best moves of the Sinulog Festival.
The group said it is ready to take on another challenge after representing and winning various local and national competitions.
A total of 12 squads coming from different areas in the country were invited to Sorsogon. These include the Mangga-Wayan Festival of San Carlos, Pangasinan; Tanglawan festival of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan; Hamaka festival of Taytay, Rizal; Antipolo Maytime festival, Rizal; Gaginaway festival of South Cotabato plus the top 3 performers of the regional Festival of Festivals of the Kasanggayahan Festival.
Lao said their festival dancers on stage are not just mere performers but “embody the spirit of courage, resilience, and beauty that Lapulapu City represents.”
“Through our performance, they will transport you to a time of bravery and triumph, while also showcasing the vibrant culture and natural splendor that define our beloved city," Lao added. — (FREEMAN)
