Shower rooms in LGU offices pushed

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Local government units are encouraged to establish shower rooms for their employees while the national government is working on a sustainable public transportation.

Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos, in a memorandum issued to all Provincial governors, municipal and city mayors as well as to all barangay captains, urged the local chief executives and the DILG directors to provide shower rooms for their employees who may want to freshen up after commuting.

This is in line with the national government’s promotion of sustainable transportation system that encourages active transportation such as walking and biking.

Abalos said that sustainable transportation plays a crucial role in the country's pursuit of economic growth and overall sustainable development. This involves the harmonious implementation of policies, innovative technologies and other solutions that aim at systematically improving the efficiency and effectiveness of mobility.

This also mitigates the adverse environmental impacts associated with transportation. And to be able to achieve sustainable transportation, the national government is promoting active transportation by way of walking, biking and other similar active transport.

But for people to walk, bike or even ride public transportation in going to their respective offices, they need accessible shower rooms to freshen up. As such, all LGUs are highly encouraged to establish and provide accessible shower rooms in Provincial Capitol, City Hall, and Municipal Halls.

Shower rooms will be for the use of local officials, employees, and the general commuting public to further promote active transportation.

Local officials are told to refer to the Design and Standards for Bicycle Parking Facilities/Amenities issued by the Department of Public Works and Highways in support of the DOH-DOTR-DILG- DPWH Joint Administrative Order No.2020-0013 specifically in the provision of toilets, showers and changing facilities.
