DOST pushes using science and tech vs. disasters

CEBU, Philippines — The Visayas leg of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) “Handa Pilipinas” wrapped up its three-day event in Cebu City that started on July 24 to 26, with its agenda focused on enhancing the region’s disaster resilience through Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI).

The undertaking seeks to serve as a critical platform for knowledge exchange and collaborative efforts aimed at fortifying the resilience of the Visayas Region through cutting-edge science and technology.

In his keynote address, DOST Secretary Dr. Renato Solidum Jr. underscored the pivotal role of STI in disaster risk reduction and management. He said STI is crucial in addressing the challenges in disaster risk reduction and staying ahead of the curve in disaster management.

In his opening remarks, DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Dr. Sancho Mabborang highlighted the integral role of science in Disaster Risk Reduction Management and emphasized how local government units act as active collaborators to offer significant insights from their on-ground experiences.

This collaboration allows for the sharing of best practices across various LGUs and fosters more resilient and well-prepared communities.

Solidum elaborated on three key messages: redefining Filipino resilience, understanding hazards and risks, and harnessing appropriate solutions.

DOST Undersecretary for Special Concerns Dr. Teodoro Gatchalian delivered a special message spotlighting the indomitable spirit of the Visayans.

“Time and again, the fighting spirit of the Visayans has shone through, demonstrating unyielding resilience. We gather to once again to strengthen that resilience with the power of innovation, the DOST power,” Gatchalian told the close to 400 participants joining the event.

With the theme "Enhancing Visayas' Resilience through Science, Technology and Innovation," the event aims to enhance the country's resilience by raising awareness on disaster risk reduction, capacitating the public on the disaster risk reduction technologies, and accelerating the practical use of DOST innovations and technologies for disaster reduction and management. — (FREEMAN)
