Man killed by cops for resisting arrest
CEBU, Philippines — A man was killed by police operatives from Waterfront Police Station in Cebu City after resisting arrest. The incident occurred in Sitio Tevil, Barangay Tejero, on Monday night, July 15, 2024.
Santiago Yu, also known as Tiago, Yu, a resident of Sitio Silangan 1, Barangay Tejero, was the subject of concern from a concerned citizen who reported an armed man at a chapel in Sitio Silangan 1. Police Major John Lynbert Yango, Chief of Waterfront Police Station 3, responded to the call.
Upon entering the chapel, one of the police officers encountered the suspect and exchanged gunfire. Fortunately, the officer was not hit. The suspect then fled into a nearby house and escaped through the roof.
The police pursued the suspect, who eventually jumped into a river. Backup was called from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team.
Major Yango said: “Last night, we were searching for him in Silangan 1. He climbed down to the river from their area, even losing his shorts in the process. He was near their house in Silangan 1 when he was apprehended.”
The suspect later arrived in Sitio Tevil, still within Barangay Tejero, where police had received information that he was armed. During the search, the suspect opened fire, prompting the police to return fire.
Alias Tiago sustained injuries during the exchange, and it was revealed that he was involved in a recent shooting incident. He had a pending theft case and had recently been released from prison on drug-related charges. — (FREEMAN)
