SRP Sinulog venue eyed as sports haven

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Acting Cebu City Vice Mayor Donaldo  Dondon  Hontiveros has envisioned the controversial venue of the past two Sinulog staging at the South Road Properties (SRP) for another purpose as a haven for sports while not in use for the festival.

He showed a glimpse of what can be done of the Sinulog stage and viewing area during the City Government s Go Skate Day last Saturday.

Hundreds of local skateboarders, mostly out-of-school youth, had a good time showcasing their skills during the event.

National team member Motic Panugalinog, who spearheaded the locals, told The Freeman that such place will be a good spot if Hontiveros  plan would indeed push through.

Hontiveros said he had already informed Mayor Mike Rama of his plan while the City s indoor skate park had yet to be realized.

With Mayor Rama giving a nod to it, Hontiveros said, he will bring this matter up to Acting Mayor Raymond Garcia for his go signal to utilize the area, not only for skateboarders but also for other sporting activities.

Hontiveros told The Freeman that the covered area can also be used for basketball while another portion can be for volleyball, although he still had to get an expert s opinion concerning the ceiling clearance, among other things.

Since it is not accessible to public transportation, Hontiveros said, he is looking into providing free rides for those who want to go to the area, although this can also be arranged with City De Mare (CDM) and Filinvest since they had offered free rides from different points in the city going to CDM and Il Corso.

Hontiveros is hopeful things will go smoothly as planned, as it is a safe place for the youngsters, with security guards assigned in the area. The location also has a roof just in case it would rain.

He said, though, that some improvements have to be introduced to cater to the concerns of the athletes and sports enthusiasts.

Filinvest earlier revealed its plan to have a football field while also providing a place for cyclists and other sports, all for a healthier and happier Cebuano community.
