DOH-7 underscores 4s in fight vs dengue

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Health Central Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH-CV-CHD) underscored the significance of 4s strategies in the fight against dengue.

Dr. Ronald Jarvik Buscato, Medical Officer IV of DOH CV CHD- Communicable Diseases Section, said that 4s strategies--Search and Destroy breeding sites; Self-protection measures such as wearing long sleeves and using insect repellents; Seeking early consultation for fever lasting more than two days; and Support  fogging/spraying only in hotspot areas—are proven to be most effective against dengue.

"Ang dengue ay dala ng isang virus na natra-transmit ng Aedes aegypti na lamok at Aedes albopictus. Yung Aedes aegypti ay mas mahilig magtambay sa loob ng bahay at ang Aedes albopictus mahilig mag tambay sa labas ng bahay," he explained.

Buscato highlighted the importance of prevention and control strategies through educating the public.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes, primarily the aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus mosquitoes.

Common symptoms include high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. To reduce the risk of dengue, individuals are advised to protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing protective clothing, using mosquito nets, repellents, coils, and vaporizers.

“Part ng program po natin sa Department of Health is to provide free dengue NS1 RDTs to RHUs [Rural Health Units] and HOs [Health Offices]  upang ang mga taong  nagkalagnat ng at least 24 hours ma test po natin yung dugo nila kung may dengue ba o wala," said Buscato.

“We base all our interventions sa Region 7 sa ating dengue vector surveillance at case surveillance kasi importante pong malaman namin anong klase na lamok,” Buscato added.

Data from DOH-CVCHD shows that from January 1, 2024 to May 25, 2024, there were 6,539 dengue cases in Central Visayas with 16 deaths—Bohol (5); Cebu Province (5); Negros Oriental (4); Cebu City (1); Mandaue City (1). — (FREEMAN)
