Candles lit for HIV/AIDS victims

CEBU, Philippines — In commemoration of International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day, the Mandaue City government headed by Mayor Jonas Cortes spearheaded a candle lighting the other night to honor those who lost their lives to AIDS, show support to those living with HIV/AIDS, decrease stigma of those who were infected, and raise community awareness and involvement in the fight against the disease.

“We are devoted to building a society where everyone feels valued, safe, and supported. Let the glow of light inspire us to continue striving for a world where empathy and understanding triumph over ignorance and discrimination,” the mayor said in his speech.

The event was mostly attended by the youth sector in the city and some members of the LGBTQIA sector, it was conducted in partnership with the Mandaue City Health Office.

This as the Department of Health Central Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH Central Visayas CHD) paid tribute to those affected by HIV/AIDS during the Philippine International AIDS Candlelight Memorial 2024 with the theme "Put People First: Kandila ng Pagkalinga, Liwanag ng Pag-asa”.

DOH-7 said that the week-long event features a series of activities including HIV awareness seminars, free counseling and testing, and community initiatives aimed at combating stigma and discrimination.

Collaborating with various organizations, healthcare professionals, and other partners in health, the DOH Central Visayas CHD conducted a series of seminars, candlelight ceremonies, awareness campaigns, and educational webinars on dealing with AIDS-related issues throughout the week.

Community pantries and support services were also launched to provide ongoing assistance to individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

“These concerted efforts underscored the significance of solidarity, education, and compassion in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the country,” the health department added. — (FREEMAN)
