March 28 declared BPO Day in Cebu City

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Council has approved an ordinance declaring every 28th of March as Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Day.

March 28 is the same day in 2020 that the city was placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) and the declaration highlights the sector’s economic contribution during the combat against COVID-19 pandemic.

The declaration follows the approval of the proposed ordinance authored by Councilor Pancrasio Esparis, chairman of the Committee of Social Services. It was approved in third reading and final deliberation during the council’s regular session last Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

Esparis’ ordinance cited that the BPO industry has “infused billions” into Cebu City’s economy and has provided thousands of jobs for Cebuanos and even for neighboring provinces.

“Through years since its establishment in Cebu, the industry has grown from strength to strength and has, in fact, prevailed against the economic ill-effects of Covid-19 because the men and women of the industry shouldered on,” reads an excerpt of the ordinance.

The observance further aims to promote “appreciation and understanding” of the crucial role of BPO industry in the economic development of Cebu City.

“To express gratitude towards the BPO industry, the employees and employers, for the efforts they exerted to keep the industry alive,” it reads.

Further, the resolution also underscored that the Department of Manpower Development and Placement (DMDP) shall be in-charge of the celebration of the BPO Day.

“Basta, angayan lamang tingali hatagan ug igong bili ang maong industriya ang mga empleyado ug ingun man ang mga employers,” Esparis said during the public hearing. (CEBU NEWS)
