Van rear-ends PUJ; five injured

CEBU, Philippines — Five people were injured in a collision between a private van and a public utility jeepney (PUJ) on M. J. Cuenco Ave., Brgy. Hipodromo, Cebu City, past 2 a.m. yesterday.

The PUJ was driven by Napoleon Andrino Toleno, 57, of Ponce Compound 2, Brgy. Carreta, Cebu City while the van driver was July Louie Cabra, 22, of Talisay City.

Authorities identified those injured as Rolita Dacalos, 40; Robio Leo Rag, 36; Marife Parami, 44; Jenyl Desalas, 31; and Zaineth Ann Lepiten, 23, who are all passengers of the PUJ.

Investigation by the Cebu City Police Office-Traffic Enforcement Unit (CCPO-TEU) showed that the southbound PUJ was not moving when it was rear-ended by the van Cabra drove.

The impact resulted to the passengers suffering mostly minor injuries, with responders bringing Lepiten only to the hospital for treatment.

As of press time, Cabra was detained at the CCPO-TEU custodial facility and may face a complaint of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries and damage to property. — (FREEMAN)
