Tagbilaran City kicks off Saulog 2024 celebration

CEBU, Philippines — Tagbilaran City has officially opened its Saulog 2024 celebration in time for the 459th Blood Compact Commemoration last Saturday, March 16, 2024.

“Today marks a truly special occasion for the people of Tagbilaran City as we gather to commemorate an event of profound historical significance. 459 years ago, the blood compact between Bol-anon Datu Sikatuna and Spanish General Miguel Lopez de Legazpi took place, forging the foundations of friendship and understanding,” said Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Yap during the event.

The mayor said that this historical milestone holds a special place in their history, symbolizing not only a crucial moment in time but also shaping the essence of who they are as Boholanos.

“This first international treaty of friendship underscores the enduring qualities that define us - a people known for its inherent friendliness,” she said before the crowd at the Friendship Park Amphitheatre, where the marker of Atty. Zoilo Dejaresco Jr. was also unveiled.

Yap said that the relaunching of the Blood Compact Site stands as a testament to their enduring reverence for this pivotal moment in history. The Blood Compact sculpture, crafted by Boholano National Artist Napoleon Abueva, is situated at the expansive amphitheater, a scenic viewing deck, an ancient well, and a Heroes Park.

The park is named in honor of the late editor-publisher of the Bohol Chronicles. The city government of Tagbilaran expressed gratitude to the late lawyer for his leadership, which paved the way for the creation of the Tagbilaran City Friendship Park.

The park, Yap said, has become synonymous with the annual Saulog Tagbilaran festivities, and they envision it to be a hub for tourism in the months ahead.

“Today's events mark not only a remembrance of our history but also the continuation of a legacy of innovation and progress in our beloved city. And it is most evident in our very own festival- Saulog Tagbilaran,” she said.

Yap added that they are poised to showcase the finest offerings of their city in terms of entertainment, cuisine, and culture which Saulog Tagbilaran has been known for. Yap said they have an exciting lineup of events, performances, and activities that will highlight the best of Tagbilaran and its people.

To bring even greater solemnity to Saulog, Yap encourages all businesses and residents to display the image of their revered patron, Sr. San Jose, on their establishments and homes, as well as to actively join in the novena and masses.

This year’s Saulog Tagbilaran will be packed with activities and major events that stretches until May, including the Saulog Sports Grand Opening on April 17; Mutya sa Tagbilaran on April 20;  Saulog Festival King and Queen on April 23; Saulog Street Dancing Competition and Parade on May 1, 2024 and a lot more.

“Yet beyond all these activities, we should always remember that Saulog Tagbilaran is also a celebration of faith… serving as our humble offering of thanksgiving to our patron saint, Sr. San Jose. It is a heartfelt expression of gratitude for the gift of life and the blessings bestowed upon us throughout the year, with a fervent hope that this year will be filled with even greater prosperity for all,” Yap said.

The Saulog also hopes to further boost the tourism sector of the city by showcasing the talents, artistry, and craftsmanship of the people and local businesses that aims to attract local and foreign visitors. (CEBU NEWS)
