Court dismisses ‘dirty finger’ students’ case

Adelyn Landiza - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The two engineering students who were arrested during the Sinulog festivity last Sunday for flashing the dirty finger while taking a selfie with two policemen as background can now heave a sigh of relief.

This, after the Regional Trial Court Branch 17 dismissed the case of unjust vexation filed against them after they apologized to the policemen in open court.

In a phone interview with Attorney Mel Ebo yesterday, he said his clients were happy with the court’s decision to junk the case.

He maintained that there were irregularities in the arrest of the two students, so they filed a filed motion before the court.

“Happy ra mi. Happy ra mi sa decision sa court,” Ebo said.

He said that his co-counsels, Attorney Jay Pujanes and Attorney Cecille Mancao, filed a motion to quash the case on Thursday, Jan.15, which the court granted yesterday.

Ebo said the students also apologized to the policemen for their actions, and the court granted their motion to quash, leading to the dismissal of the case.

Last Sunday, the two students were in Lapulapu St., Brgy. San Roque, Cebu City when they decided to goof around and take a selfie while giving the camera the dirty finger. The two policemen whom they used as background promptly arrested them.

The students ended up in jail but were set free after each posted a P3,000 bail.

They maintained that they meant no disrespect for the policemen and that the dirty finger was just meant for their friends. (CEBU NEWS)
