CEBU, Philippines — Two brothers with "mental disability" died after fire struck their home in Brgy. Poblacion, Sibonga, Cebu past midnight Tuesday.

Authorities identified them as Kyle Dominic Geronimo, 25, and Fernando Geronimo, 26.

Initial investigation showed that prior to the fire, which occurred at 1:50 p.m., a power outage occurred at 11 p.m. on Dec. 25.

An uncle of the victim told The Freeman that he suspected that one of the brothers lit a candle in their room before sleeping and that the candle may have caused the fire.

“Gitabang unta sa uyoan, iyang gibombahan og fire extinguisher, 'nya dili man niya maabli ang pultahan bisan unsaon niya og sikad," said Police Staff Sergeant Rick Serino of Sibonga Police Station.

"Abi niya napalong na, nikuha og bara aron iyang ligwatan. Pagbalik niya nidako na ang kayo. Napaso gani to gamay ang uyoan,” he added.

Authorities said the semi-concrete house was owned by the victims' aunt, although their parents just live nearby.

Sibonga fire station estimated the damage at P178,000.— (FREEMAN)
