Smart TV now in almost all public school classrooms in Cebu City

CEBU, Philippines — A Smart television set for every classroom in all public schools in Cebu City is now becoming a reality.

This project, spearheaded by the Department of Education-Cebu City along with the Cebu City government, aims to revolutionize education through technology.

Under the rallying cry of #CebuCityRising, this project stresses the city’s dedication to advancing education through technological means.

This also supports DepEd’s initiatives to enhance literacy and numeracy, ensuring that the youth of Cebu City are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

This effort, according to DepEd-Cebu City, is a testament to their commitment to harnessing technology to enhance the educational experience for both teachers and students in public schools across Cebu City. It is a vision for technological transformation in education that is aligned with DepEd’s MaTaTaG agenda.

The “DepEd Smart TVs for Classrooms” initiative stands as a beacon of social equity, ensuring that all teachers and students in public schools have equal access to cutting-edge technology.

The project is structured into three phases as disclosed by DepEd-Cebu City assistant schools division superintendent Adolf Aguilar to The Freeman.

The phase 1 is the delivery of 1,600 Smart TVs, a 55-inch TCL, with an additional 400 units funded by DepEd. Each unit only cost P16,000 accordingly.

“Barato kayo pagkapalit sa DepEd. You can’t buy a Smart TV na TLC, 55 inches at 16k per unit sa mall or appliance center…This is a result of a competitive and transparent procurement process.”

Phase 2, on the other hand, is a collaboration with the local government of Cebu City, contributing 1,600 units which are currently in the bidding process.

At present, 94 percent of Cebu City public school classrooms have already been covered.

Phase 3 is the provision of an additional 800 units through the Local School Board of Cebu City. This is expected to be completed under next year’s LSB budget.

With this, every classroom in the School Division Office (SDO) of Cebu City is already set to transform into a Smart classroom, equipped with Smart TVs, tablets, and internet connectivity in 2024. — /GMR (FREEMAN)
