Three major projects seen to revitalize Danao City
CEBU, Philippines — The Danao City government recently embarked several events that mark important milestones in the city’s development, culture, and values.
City officials led by Mayor Thomas Mark “Mix” Durano broke ground their new “Merkado sa Danao,” which is estimated to cost P400 million.
Durano, in his message, expressed his gratitude to everyone who made it possible. He also reiterated the city’s determination to rebuild this vital hub for the vendors and its residents.
“Among pasalig nga among i-ula tanang kusug ug panahon para mubarug pagbalik ang atong mercado publiko. Among paningkamutan nga mas mulagsik ang atong local nga ekonomiya. Ug labaw sa tanan among iseguro nga makapaninda pag-usab sulod sa hamugaway nga merkado and we shall not rest until the last pillar stands, until the roof is installed, and until everyone gets back on their feet. This is our promise to every single Danawanon, we shall dedicate our energy and time from groundbreaking to ribbon-cutting,” the mayor said.
The groundbreaking of the new market marks the city’s determined step to rise from the ashes and rebuild its iconic public market.
In June 2022, the Danao City Public Market, which was built 29 years ago, was a symbol of friendship and cooperation between Danao City and Japan through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), faced a devastating fire.
Also, city officials broke ground its Museo de Danao which will be the keeper of their rich history, art and cultural treasures.
It will also serve as a public library and a hub for various cultural activities and workshops as they take a step toward preserving their heritage.
The museum, with an estimated cost of P20 million, is poised to be the guardian of its rich heritage as culture and heritage are deeply ingrained in the heart and soul of the city.
The museum will house a diverse collection of artifacts, heirlooms and cultural treasures that speak of Danao City’s rich history, arts, and traditions.
Beyond preservation and being a repository of cultural gems, the museum will also serve as public library and a hub for various cultural activities and workshops, fostering the development of artistic skills.
In addition, the City Tourism Office will also be housed at the same location creating a central hub for cultural exploration.
In her speech, Danao City Councilor Ivy Durano-Meca, said that museum will be a testament to their commitment to their heritage, culture, and the shared stories of our community.
“Let this be a reminder that every step we take, every brick we lay, is a step toward a brighter and more enriched future. With the Danao City Museum, we are building not just a physical structure, but a bridge to our past, a window to our present, and a door to our future. May this groundbreaking ceremony be a symbol of unity, progress, and the enduring spirit of Danao here and now,” said Meca.
City officials also inaugurated the Sidlak Danao,” which translates to “shine,” carries a profound meaning reflecting its guiding principles, with each letter symbolizing a core value that forms the very heart of the city: S- Servant Leadership, I - Inclusivity, D - Developmental, L - Livable, A-Adaptability, K- Knowledge, D - Dynamic, A - Accountable, N- Nurturing, A - Action, and 0 - Order.
This initiative, formalized through an ordinance passed by the City Council, underscores the city’s commitment in upholding these core values and integrating them into every aspect or governance and community.
These core values, even before the unveiling, have been the foundation of the city’s continued growth and development, reinforcing its commitment in fostering a values-driven and dynamic community.
The Sidlak Danao Park renovation, with an estimated cost of P925,414, is funded entirely by the city’s budget and relied on the dedication of its own manpower and talents through the City Engineering Office (CEO).
Mayor Durano said that these three events signal the continued transformation of their city that marked their commitment to a revitalized city.
The mayor added that the SIDLAK Danao perfectly fits well to the sunrise from the east, which is a reminder that there is indeed hope every single day. — (FREEMAN)
