CEBU, Philippines — Take part in the solution or be the enemy.
This was the warning of Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama to officials of Barangay Duljo-Fatima, as well as those seeking for office in the coming election, as the city government discovered the persisting garbage problem in the area.
Rama called out the attention of barangay captain Elmer Abella and the rest of those who are running in the upcoming Barangay and SK Elections to take action against their garbage concern.
“All of you will have to participate, then I will declare you as an enemy of the office of the Mayor,” warned Rama, over his teleradyo program through the City’s Sugboanon channel yesterday.
The city government found out that sitio Bohol of the said barangay has become a dumpsite, and also has a dried fish production area amidst tons of garbage around it.
The garbage may not just be from the residents of the area itself, but Mayor Rama said it is not an excuse not to keep the area clean.
“Kanang mga tawo diha dili gani na magtinabangay, sira!” said Rama.
Mayor Rama said this is not the only concern in the area as it has had other concerns including drugs, health and sanitation, and gambling. The mayor added that apart from the officials, the community needs to take part in solving these issues.
An executive order is being prepared in this connection while Rama is also looking into the amendment of the City’s Solid Waste ordinance to impose higher penalties.
Further, Mayor Rama is also pushing for the opening of more roads and adding lighting in Barangay Duljo-Fatima, as well as in Barangay Mambaling and in the nearby barangays for easier access for garbage collection and for peace and order concerns. — /ATO (FREEMAN)
