CEBU, Philippines — The 3.5 hectare Isla Mactan Cordova Corporation (IMCC)’s Cordova Desalination Plant, the country’s first and biggest desalination plant, is due for completion in December this year.

It is located in the barangays of Poblacion, Buagsong, and Catarman in Cordova, Cebu,

“Malipayon kita nga ang LGU Cordova nahimong part sa history sa country’s first and biggest desalination plant. Dako usab kini nga matabang sa income sa lungsod which in turn will be converted to giving Cordovanhons basic services,” said Cordova Mayor Cesar Suan, during the installation ceremony of the desalination plant equipment recently.

The event was graced by Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senator Risa Hontiveros and other local officials.

The two senators praised IMCC, a subsidiary of Vivant Corp., for its commitment to pouring billions of pesos in capital in an enterprise that looks out for a very basic human need which is water.

According to Sugbo News, the Facebook page of the Cebu provincial government, the desalination plant can produce up to 20 million liters of potable water daily which is expandable to 50 million liters, helping address Metro Cebu’s growing water scarcity problem.

According to the governor, the facility, aside from harnessing nature’s seldom-tapped resource for potable water, also brings economic gains and benefits for Cordova and the entire One Cebu Island.

The desalination plant is a product of public-private partnership under the build-operate-transfer scheme.

IMCC will transfer to the Municipality of Cordova the ownership rights to the facility after 25 years of operation, thereby augmenting the LGU’s high-value assets.

“Salamat ani nga project kay maka-produce kini og at least 20 million liters nga limpyo ug mainom nga tubig. Dako kaayo ni nga tabang sa paghatag og alibyo sa problema sa water supply sa sa Metro Cebu,” the mayor said.

The first time mayor added that the said desalination plant uses state-of-the-art reverse osmosis technology that will eliminate the salt and other minerals from the seawater making it safe for drinking and other household and commercial consumption. — (FREEMAN)
