Cebu’s first iBarangay launched in Lapu-Lapu
CEBU, Philippines — The iBarangay (Intelligent Barangay) was officially launched in Barangay Mactan in Lapu-Lapu City, as part of the country’s Digital Transformation Program.
The initiative, spearheaded by B.E.D Global Inc, an organization that specializes in the development of a Smart City, focuses on creating a modern urban area that uses information and communication technology to increase operational efficiency, environmental preservation, and social inclusivity.
In a statement, B.E.D. said the project is built on the foundation of five key pillars, each aimed at empowering communities and bringing about holistic development.
These pillars include Internet Connectivity, Solar Power, Water, Distance Learning, and Telemedicine.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan, who graced the press conference, is thankful to the officials of B.E.D. Global Inc. for choosing Barangay Mactan as the first iBarangay in Cebu.
Internet Connectivity is a fundamental pillar of iBarangay aimed at bridging the digital divide that hampers progress in underserved areas because, currently, only 70 percent of the country can have access to a decent internet, while 30 percent of the Philippines are either unserved or underserved.
By providing reliable and affordable internet access, iBarangay units empower residents with the tools and resources necessary to participate in the digital age.
The Solar Power pillar of iBarangay focuses on providing sustainable and reliable energy solutions to local communities.
By installing solar panels and promoting renewable energy adoption, iBarangay units address the high cost of electricity and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources. Solar power ensures consistent and affordable electricity supply, empowering barangays to become self-sufficient and environmentally conscious.
The Water pillar of iBarangay recognizes the importance of access to clean and safe water for every community. Through innovative water processing and management systems, such as rainwater harvesting and filtration, iBarangay units ensure a sustainable supply of water.
The fourth pillar aims to ensure access to quality education for all residents by leveraging technology and internet connectivity, iBarangay units facilitate distance learning programs.
Online classes, digital resources, and virtual platforms enable students in remote areas to access educational opportunities, bridge the educational gap, and acquire the skills needed for future success.
The Telemedicine pillar of iBarangay leverages technology to enhance healthcare access in remote and underserved areas. Through secure online platforms, residents can connect with healthcare professionals, receive remote consultations, obtain diagnoses, and access necessary medications.
“The five pillars of iBarangay work in harmony to empower communities and promote holistic development. By addressing the digital divide, ensuring sustainable energy, providing access to clean water, facilitating distance education, and enhancing healthcare services, iBarangay units uplift barangays across the nation,” the B.E.D. added.
Glenn Espino, Chairman of B.E.D. Global Inc., said that they plan to put up iBarangays in 200 to 300 barangays all over the country in the next 18 months. — (FREEMAN)
