CEBU, Philippines — At least 57 individuals have to be evacuated to safer grounds Monday morning following a landslide in Sitio Cantipla, Barangay Sudlon 2, Cebu City.

No one was hurt during the incident that occurred past 7 a.m. but a house owned by Junel Borres was totally destroyed.

“Wala ray naanggol sa nahitabong landslide ganinang alas siete pasado sa buntag diha sa Upper Cantipla, Barangay Sudlon 2, Cebu City…Hinoon maayong pagkaguba sa panimay nga iya ni Junel Borres ug didto na gipunit sa ubos nga bahin,” said Ramil Ayuman, special assistant to the mayor.

The Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS) said a total of 13 houses were affected and are now off limits to residents. According to DSWS, the 13 families affected were immediately provided assistance by the city government.  Some of them, however, decided to stay with relatives and neighbors while the others are temporarily sheltered at Cantipla Elementary School.

“Matud ni Jhun Carlo Bayot sa Sudlon 2 barangay responders nga gipabakwit nila ang mga nagpuyo sa danger zone ug gibutangan na pud ug caution line,” said Ayuman.

An early warning made by the barangay responders to the residents in the area prevented what could have been a catastrophic incident. According to the barangay responders, they warned the residents of an impending earth movement in the area after they noticed some cracks on the ground near Borres’ house.

According to Ayuman, Borres’ house was built on unstable ground because the area was a dumping site for excavated soil from a road project.

Meanwhile, authorities have closed the Cebu-Toledo Wharf Road yesterday due to a landslide in Barangay Manipis, Talisay City.

A video uploaded by the Talisay City Traffic Group shows a huge boulder blocking the entire road. The Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) was forced to close the road for traffic while clearing operations are being done.

Motorists going to Toledo City are advised to take the Naga-Uling road for the meantime. — (FREEMAN)
