Homeless persons still on the streets
CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama earlier gave an ultimatum---no more people sleeping on the streets starting June 12.
A day after June 12---several homeless individuals are still found sleeping and begging on the streets of Cebu City. The mayor refused to answer questions on the matter saying he still needs to meet with the personnel involved.
According to Rama, he needs to discuss the implementation of his order with the members of the Prevention Restoration Order Beautification and Enhancement (PROBE) team, Cebu City Police Office, barangay tanods, lupon tagapamayapa, and Task Force Kasaligan before giving his observation.
A “comprehensive idea” is allegedly necessary for him to come up with his observation and possible actions. The mayor hinted that an executive order may be issued.
He, however, said that cleaning the city is a continuing process and that everyone should be involved.
"Kitang tanan magtinabangay kay ang kalimpyo kinahanglan nga magsugod sa kaugalingon nato nga panimalay," Rama said.
Mobilizing the various sectors to help strengthen the Singapore-like city campaign is something that Rama said he strongly considers. He said he will ask the help of the police, barangay officials, and fraternities to help. — (FREEMAN)
