CEBU, Philippines — Danao City officials and residents gathered for the inauguration of Plaza Beatriz and the switch-on ceremony of the Danao City Fountain, combining heritage and progress in a mesmerizing display, during the city’s 62nd Charter Day celebration recently.

With a total investment of P8.3 million, the opening of Plaza Beatriz alongside the renovation of the old fountain symbolizes Danao City's commitment in preserving its heritage while embracing progress.

It embodies the city's identity, unity, and celebration, showcasing the fusion of history and modernity.

The fountain will be fully operational on weekdays from 4PM to 9PM with genre themed lights and sounds presentations from 7PM to 9PM on Saturdays and 6PM to 8PM on Sundays.

Plaza Beatriz, situated at the heart of Danao City, holds deep historical and cultural significance.

Originally built in the 1960s, the iconic plaza has captivated residents and visitors for decades.

In its recent renovation, Plaza Beatriz underwent a magnificent transformation, incorporating modern lights and sounds into its fountain, creating a captivating spectacle that seamlessly merges tradition with innovation.

At the core of this project lies a tribute to one remarkable Danawanon—Beatriz Duterte Durano, affectionately known as "Manang Ati."

She served as the first and only woman mayor of Danao from 1956 to 1971, playing a pivotal role in shaping the city's landscape. Her visionary leadership and unwavering dedication, alongside her husband, Manong Amon (former city mayor and congressman), transformed Danao from a quiet town into a thriving chartered city.

Among the notable achievement of Manang Ati's was the establishment of the iconic jet fountain within Plaza Beatriz.

As the first of its kind in the city, the project symbolizes her commitment in creating stunning open spaces that inspire joy and appreciation for Danao City's natural beauty.

“She left her legacy at this place where families could come together to enjoy and relax because in her heart, a family is always the center of a strong community. A family is the pillar of a progressive city. No wonder Danao thrived all these years because we are guided by the principles of a strong mother—Beatriz Duterte Durano,” said Danao City Mayor Thomas Mark Durano.

For his part, Danao City Vice Mayor Nito Durano asked the residents to be part with the city in taking care of the plaza.

“With its dancing and sparkling waters, its rainbow of colors, and the soothing sounds and music, this fountain symbolizes our existence—the hopes and vitality of life that we deserve. Atong tabangan nga magpadayon kining Plaza Beatriz sa pagsimbolo sa atong panaghiusa ug sa atong paningkamot nga ang atong kinabuhi magmalampuson, hapsay, ug malipayon," said the vice mayor. — (FREEMAN)
