Cops on alert for Labor Day, NDF anniversary activities

CEBU, Philippines — The Police Regional Office (PRO)-7 is on heightened alert since yesterday as part of its preparations for activities that may take place in relation to the anniversary of the National Democratic Front (NDF) today and for the upcoming Labor Day on Monday.

Police Lt. Col. Gerard Ace Pelare, PRO-7 spokesperson, said they held a command conference to prepare for the possible activities during those dates.

Pelare said that the police have recognized the sacrifices of the workers and they are free to express their feelings based on that observation.

“Di ba naay giingon sa Constitution nga we are free to exercise our right as long as we do not violate the rights of others. Ang PNP would like that they will celebrate it peacefully, securely, so naa mi magbantay.  Actually, naa mi monitoring if they want to conduct their protests and rallies.  They just have to make sure nga it is in accord with (the) law kung unsay naa sa mga balaod,” said Pelare.

The police official has urged those who would be protesting or celebrating to be extra cautious not to let anyone take advantage of the situation, such as the thieves, robbers or members of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG).

“Actually, under the law, they should get a permit except if they will do it sa designated freedom parks nato.  But the PNP is exercising leniency as far as this group is concerned because we recognize their right also for freedom of expression. So, hangyo lang namo wala’y violations of law, wala’y kagubot.  Dili mag-take advantage atong Communist Terrorist Group.  Of course, if the PNP feels if naa nay na-disrupt ang security or traffic kayo, we will be there to negotiate, to talk to them,” said Pelare.

He added that these groups are not difficult to talk to, based on the past experiences, while also revealing that they will do daily monitoring of the movement. (CEBU NEWS)
