Island hopping gone wrong: 18 students recued in Lapu-Lapu City
CEBU, Philippines — Eighteen Customs Administration students of the University of Cebu-Lapu-Lapu Mandaue (UCLM) were rescued by the Lapu-Lapu City Rescue on Easter Sunday after the motor banca they were riding encountered a mechanical problem near Pangan-an Island.
Lapu-Lapu City City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office Head Nagiel Bañacia said no one was injured during the incident.
In his Facebook post, Bañacia said that the students were rescued at 9:40 p.m. on Sunday.
“Walay naangol kanila gawas lang nga gipang-gutom ug gikuyawan ang mga na-rescue nga mga tinun-an Customs Administration sa UCLM nga nag-island hopping atol sa pagsaulog nila sa Easter Sunday dinhi sa mga isla sa Lapu-Lapu,” said Banacia in his post.
“Matud pa sa mga naluwas nga nag-island hopping, naguba ang timon sa ilang gisakyan nga Motor Bangka Papa Raymundo tungod kay hunas na ang dagat samtang sila naglawig duol sa Tres Marias, Isla sa Pangan-an,” he added.
The Sea Ambulance 701 of the Lapu-Lapu City Rescue was immediately sent to the scene and rescued the stranded passengers.
The passengers were brought back to Sta. Rosa and to Hilton port to check their condition by the medics of Lapu-Lapu City Rescue and Philippine Red Cross Lapu-Lapu / Cordova Chapter before they were sent home to their respective homes. — GAN (FREEMAN)
