CEBU, Philippines — The observance of the Holy Week in the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu and neighboring local government units of Consolacion and Cordova was considered the “most peaceful,” after no crimes or untoward incident was recorded.

In Mandaue City, the “Siete Palabras” (Seven Last Words) event was held last Friday inside the National Shrine of Saint Joseph in Barangay Centro and ended peacefully.

Police Colonel Jeffrey Caballes, director of the Mandaue City Police Office, had deployed several policemen to provide security to the Mandauenons who attended the event.

Police Colonel Elmer Lim, director of the Lapu-Lapu-City Police Office, stepped up their patrols in the different churches and places of convergence by riding a bicycle.

The Cordova policemen also did the same and dubbed their initiative as “Bisiklita Iglesia” which is patterned after the traditional Catholic event “Visita Iglesia” where Filipinos traditionally visit seven churches while contemplating the Stations of the Cross and praying the Our Father, Hail Mary, and The Glory Be.

In Consolacion, the police provided strict security during the “Intiero Procession” held at the San Narciso Parish last Good Friday.

Police Major Antonio Ananayo Jr., chief of the Consolacion Police Station, led the security team along with his 50 police personnel.

The authorities estimated the crowd who joined the procession at 5,000. —/GAN (FREEMAN)
