Physical therapist goes wild over “late snack”

Romeo D. Marantal - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Tension broke out in Sitio Katangkungan, Barangay Sambag 1, Cebu City the late morning of Tuesday, December 13, after an armed man threatened his live-in partner over the alleged late arrival of his "snack."

The suspect was identified as Rey Pesquera, 61, a licensed physical therapist and believed to be former member of the Philippine Navy.

Sambag 1 barangay captain Aileen Guardo said they first knew of the commotion when one of Pesquera's personnel sought the barangay's assistance to pacify the latter.

Based on the initial reports, Guardo said, the suspect went hysterical when his live-in partner arrived late after he told her to buy bread for his late morning snack.

His anger went to the next level when he pointed a gun at her twice and locked the doors of our house. Luckily, the partner was able to escape.

The FREEMAN is withholding the name of the woman for security purposes.

Guardo said she sent some barangay police (tanods) to respond to the scene, but then they later sought police assistance when they knew the suspect was armed.

The negotiation went on for at least three hours, from 10 a.m. until the suspect was pinned down by the forces of the Abellana Police Station and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) around 2 p.m.

Recovered from the area were assorted gun bullets and a .9mm pistol used by the suspect.

Pesquera was then rushed to a private hospital in Cebu City when his blood pressure spiked after the incident.

Police Major Nolan Tagsip, chief of Abellana Police Station, said they would further investigate Pesquera's background as they have also received reports that he was involved in illegal drugs.

Possible charges of alarm and scandal, unjustifiable disobedience of lawful orders of Persons in Authority or their Agents, and violation of the Republic Act No. 10591 otherwise known as the "Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act" will be filed against the suspect in the meantime. —  Robhe Jane C.
