Cebu City government addresses flooding in Labangon area
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government has acted on some flooding problems in a barangay that also paved the way for the prevention of some diseases.
Councilor Jerry Guardo is back to address some flooding concerns in the barangays being the chairman of the committee on infrastructure.
Given the latest action are the four sitios of Labangon including Sto. Niño Latressas, Osmeña Drive, Cabrera Compound and Cardones.
Grace Abella, a resident of Sto. Niño Latressas, said the flood problem in their area started in 2020 because of the perimeter fence put up in their area without proper drainage.
“Nabalaka mi kay na-stagnant baya ang tubig unya aside ana hugaw baya kay dili man namo mahibaw-an kung naay gikan sa CR unya naa pay mga basura pero karon nagpasalamat gyud mi nga naa sila’ng konsehal, sa city ug nagpasalamat sad mi ni Mayor Rama ug sa iyang council nga natabangan gyud mi,” said Abella yesterday.
Guardo discussed the matter with the private company involved in the problem and cooperated with the city government.
“Wala na mosaka (tubig) kay gipaladman man sad nato so mo-drain na gyud ang tubig nila gikan sa ilaha didto dili na mo-backflow so mo drain na siya kay gipaladman naman sad siya…Imagina for so many years dugay na nila nga problema unya duha ra diay ka culvert ang gastuon para lang masulbad ang problema nila diri nga pagbaha,” said Guardo.
Guardo, however, said the work doesn’t stop there as they are looking forward that other affected areas of flooding will also be attended to as soon as possible.
Should there be other private companies involved, they also expect the same cooperation from them.
Yesterday, the Department of Health has reminded everyone to avoid “wild” diseases, especially with the rainy season around.
“More rain means more water, more breeding grounds for disease,” said DOH spokesperson, Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, in yesterday’s virtual presser.
Wild diseases mean waterborne infectious diseases, influenza, leptospirosis, and dengue.
“The DOH is reminding the public to take their flu shots, avoid wading in flood waters and ensure clean surroundings, especially where water is usually stored,” Vergeire added. — GMR (FREEMAN)
