CEBU, Philippines — The physical live drama presentation of Buhing Kalbaryo is expected to return this year as one of the regular activities in Cebu City on Good Friday.

It is part of the city government’s aligned plan for revival for traditional Lenten activities.

Since the pandemic, the Buhing Kalbaryo presentation was made online in 2020 and 2021 with past episodes.

Now that restrictions have been eased, Mayor Michael Rama has revealed that he is ready to take its physical presentation back to the streets.

Rama is the founder of Buhing Kalbaryo in 1997. This year, the 25th anniversary of the event will be celebrated.

In addition, the mayor said that the practice of the Lenten drama presentation has already begun.

The show will tell the story of Jesus until he was crucified to save the sins of the people.

Elmer “Jojo” Labella is the supervisor of 25th Buhing Kalbaryo and it has been revealed that they have a new concept especially in the production matters.

Visitors and city residents are always looking forward to the 14 stations of the Stations of the Cross that can be seen along V. Rama Street on the way to the church in Guadalupe.

The organizers admitted that it has been a big job as they are making sure that fine materials are available at the Stations of the Cross.

The yearly event serves as a way for Cebuanos to express their faith.

It is in partnership with the Philippine National Police, Cebu City Traffic Office, Department of Public Services, Parks and Playgrounds, Department of General Services, Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and others.

The play will start in the morning at the San Nicolas Parish on Good Friday. This will be followed by the staging of the Stations of the Cross strategically situated from Pahina San Nicolas to Calamba and Guadalupe.

The city government also revealed that the prescribed protocols will be strictly enforced and will also deploy a sufficient number of security and medical personnel. — GMR (FREEMAN)
