Cebu logs 767 COVID-19 deaths in 3 weeks as active cases near 15,000
CEBU, Philippines — Three weeks into higher quarantine classifications, COVID-19 numbers in Cebu are not seen showing significant improvement, with deaths this month now at 767 and active cases at 14,416.
Under the Department of Health-7’s tally, Cebu as a whole is broken down into four: Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, and the rest are part of the fourth, Cebu province.
DOH-7’s case bulletin showed that Cebu province alone has seen 441 confirmed COVID-19 deaths from August 1 to 21, 2021.
Cebu City, for its part, now has 176 deaths over the same period, breaking the second-highest number of deaths in a month (174) noted in July of last year.
Lapu-Lapu, on the other hand, now has 99 deaths while Mandaue has 51.
Based on DOH’s records, Mandaue has seen several days without having confirmed COVID-19 death.
DOH-7’s August 21’s case bulletin showed that Cebu province’s active cases remain high at 5,848.
Cebu City has 4,961 active cases; Lapu-Lapu, 1,708; and Mandaue, 1,899.
On Aug. 21, Cebu in its entirety posted 488 additional recoveries
Critical care utilization rate for Cebu has also remained at a “high-risk” level at 73%, as far as the 37 hospitals monitored by DOH are concerned.
Of the 37 hospitals here, 14 are on the critical level, four on high risk, and eight on moderate risk, while the rest are on a safe level.
As for Cebu’s neighboring provinces, Bohol has 1,722 active cases while Negros Oriental and Siquijor have 896 and 24 active cases, respectively.
Central Visayas remains in the top five regions nationwide with the most number of COVID-19 active cases based on DOH central office’s data for the past 14 days. — JMD (FREEMAN)
