CEBU, Philippines —  In a departure from tradition, Cebu City’s 84th Charter Day will be celebrated today, Feb. 24, virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Dako gyud kaayo og kalahian (There is a huge difference),” said Mayor Edgardo Labella.

The Charter Day activities have been formulated in a way that is mindful of the ongoing fight against coronavirus, which is why a virtual celebration will be held through the Facebook pages of Labella (Edgar Labella) and the city’s Public Information Office at 6 p.m.

In the morning, the city government will be holding a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of Don Vicente Rama, the Father of the Cebu City Charter.

This year’s theme: “Interwoven with Faith; Strengthened by Unity: Celebrating the Cebuano Resiliency,” expresses the #tatakCebuano resiliency that has helped the city to keep moving forward in its acts of faith and unity, according to the mayor.

“Mao ni atong gitukma gyud kay nakita  nato ang resiliency ug ang hugot nga pagtuo sa Sugbuanon sa atong Sto. Nin~o, sa atong Labaw'ng Makagagahum. Unya tungod sa atong panaghiusa, we're strengthened by unity,” said Labella.

As city celebrates its 84th Charter Day, Labella said the city government recognizes the dedication of all front liners who have worked tirelessly to respond to the health and safety of the people.

“Kung wala atong mga frontliners, dili gyud makapadayon ang atong dakbayan sa hinay-hinay nga pagbangon nato pag-usab gumikan sa epekto sa pandemiya. Ania sab ta karon maka-celebrate sa atong Charter Day tungod kay nagtinabangay kitang tanan alang sa atong kaluwasan sa virus,” he said.

During the virtual celebration, Labella will address the Cebuanos to share the city’s achievements and ongoing developments.

The city government will also be awarding 11 institutions and 20 esteemed individuals for their “invaluable contributions” in the fight against COVID-19. — JMD (FREEMAN)
