CEBU, Philippines — The installation of digital traffic lights for the Digital Traffic System project in Cebu City is around 90 percent complete per the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW).

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella, who made the announcement through his official Facebook page, said these traffic lights are already operational in some intersections in the city.

“We are implementing this upgrade and modernization of our traffic infrastructure through a joint venture with Cylix Technologies Inc. and Triune Electronic Systems Inc. aron pagpalambo sa atong trapiko, ug sa kaluwasan ug seguridad sa atong publiko,” said Labella.

Labella said the installation of traffic lights and conduits in the underground fiber optic network along P. del Rosario St. and the routes from Robinsons Fuente to Robinsons Galleria and from Radisson Blu to Landers are being finished.

He said once all the digital traffic lights are in place covering 18 areas or intersections in the city, a command center will then be developed which will serve as a central hub for the different agencies administering the traffic management in the city.

Since the start of his administration, Labella has been pushing for the upgrade of the over 30-year-old traffic system called the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS).

Labella said he envisions a modern system that can be synchronized with traffic systems of neighboring cities.

On September 2019, the Cebu City Council approved a P2.5 billion supplemental budget where P250 million was allocated for the digital traffic system.  — KQD (FREEMAN)
