CEBU, Philippines — Another 100 units of modernized jeepneys of Cebu People’s Jeep are expected to ply various routes in Metro Cebu after 30 units of the Lahug Apas Transport Cooperative started to operate last January 16, 2021.
Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board 7 regional director Eduardo Montealto, Jr. said yesterday that the 30 modern public utility jeepneys (MPUJs) operate the routes of Lahug, Apas to Carbon and vice versa.
Montealto said the provisional authority to operate for the other 100 units is now on process.
“Once mahuman na ang ilang provisional authority then we will issue their special permit to operate. Expected maka-operate na sila within this month,” Montealto said.
Montealto added that supposed to be the 50 units of MPUJs of Cordova Lapu-Lapu Metro Cebu Transport Cooperative will arrive on January 20 but it seems there is a delay.
“Kung dili na moabot ilang mga units on January 20, so basin next month nana sila makasugod og operate sa maong mga units,” Montealto said.
The LTFRB-7 expects that around 4,000 units of MPUJs will operate in Cebu for this year as it continues to work on the implementation of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.
The modernization of jeepneys will eventually lead to the demise of traditional jeepneys as majority of its operators are shifting to operate a modern ones. — GMR (FREEMAN)
