CEBU, Philippines — Close to 30 scholars who graduated with Latin honors have received cash incentives from the Cebu City government.
Those who graduated as magna cum laude received P15,000 each, while cum laude graduates got P10,000 each.
Three of the magna cum laude graduates were from Cebu Institute of Technology-University and one from the University of Cebu-main campus.
Other recipients of the cash gift were graduates from UC-METC, CTU-Main and Bonbon, CEC, CTS-Cebu and CNU.
But the number of awardees is way smaller than last year’s 200 awardees.
Scholarship program’s executive director Judy Navarrete attibuted the drop in awardees to fewer number of accredited scholars.
“This batch had fewer number of scholars being the last batch before the implementation of the K12 program of the Department of Education,” she said.
For 2019-2020’s first semester, the city has 9,600 scholars and 9,100 for the second semester.
Navarrete said though her office does not have the exact number of scholars who recently graduated as the staff are having
difficulty in monitoring them due to the pandemic.
City Councilor Donaldo Hontiveros, the scholarship committee chairman, hopes that the cash gift will inspire and motivate students more. — KQD (FREEMAN)
