CEBU, Philippines — Police have suspected that a big syndicate involving Cebu City Jail detainees could be supplying illegal drugs in the city.
This after the City Intelligence Unit (CIU) of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) seized around 1.020 kilograms of illegal drugs with an estimated value of P6.9 million in the possession of an ex-detainee identified as Jeanneth Gadiane Abayan.
Abayan was nabbed early morning yesterday after a week of CIU surveillance.
In a press conference, Police Lieutenant Colonel Wilbert Parilla, deputy city director for operations of CCPO, said that Abayan was detained in 2015 for the same offense and was acquitted in October of 2019.
“As to the group, wa pa matino kung unsay grupo but we have already names of the personalities including sa ilahang contacts inside the jail,” said Parilla.
However, the CCPO official requested not to disclose the details while follow-up investigations are ongoing.
Based on their reports, Abayan has the capacity to distribute one to two kilograms of illegal drugs a week.
“Kung maka-dispose siya’g one to two kilos a week, meaning dako na siya nga grupo, dako ilang source,” said Parilla.
He added that distributors would opt to transact big transactions with at least five to 10 grams to make it inconspicuous.
Parilla said that her husband, Graham Abayan, is currently detained in Cebu City Jail for the charges related to illegal drugs and reportedly the source or direct contact of the suspect.
He believed that the items are not in the jail but only the transactions with the use of mobile phones.
In her previous arrest in 2015, police seized around 700 small sachets weighing eight grams. — GMR (FREEMAN)
