CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu City contingents for the Sinulog Festival are enjoined to practice only after class hours to avoid disruption of online classes.

Cebu City Councilor Philip Zafra, who also sits as chairman of the City Council’s Committee on Peace and Order, said the students who are at home attending online classes will be distracted by the sound of the drums.

“Atoa gyud na awhagon ang mangapil sa mga ritual showdown nga atol sa ilang practices, dili pud madisturbo ang pagtu-on sa atong mga tinun-an. Mohimo gyud ta og lapad nga monitoring niana,” he said.

Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) is planning to hold onsite dance rituals for the Sinulog sa Dakbayan which will be streamed online.

Out-of-town contingents, on the other hand, will have to pre-tape their dance rituals.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SFI will limit the number of dancers of each contingent.

But the Sinulog organizers are expecting more contingents to join in next year’s ritual showdown.

Last year, at least 24 contingents competed in the Sinulog ritual showdown at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The SFI and the Cebu City government are still finalizing the list of Sinulog activities and the guidelines.

Sinulog is a dance ritual in honor of the miraculous image of the Santo Nino.

Meanwhile, Zafra is proposing to set up an area for the Sinulog street vendors. The old Compania Maritima Building is being eyed.

“We have to avoid throngs of people. We will establish protocols to smooth and control the crowd,” he said. — KQD (FREEMAN)
