CEBU, Philippines — Barangay health workers (BHWs) in Mambaling, Cebu City are worried about their safety and security as asymptomatic COVID-19 patients confined at the barangay isolation center (BIC) are allegedly harassing them.

Barangay Councilman Owen Atillo said some patients isolated at the Alaska Elementary School are “harassing” the BHWs.

Some patients are also defying the isolation order by going in and out of the facility, he added.

“Kaning mga (COVID-19) positive (patients) magbinuang man ilang gukdon ang mga BHWs ug ilang pang gakson. Mahadlok na gud ang mga BHWs,” said Atillo.

Adding to the workers’ fear, he said, is the lack of police detail at Mambaling Elementary School and Alaska Elementary School, both designated as BICs.

Atillo said only barangay tanods (village watchmen) are securing both BICs.

The same concern was also raised by Alaska Elementary School principal Nelson Badana.

“Ang safety sa mga pasyente didto usa pud sa akong concern.Simbako lang, naay magbinuang. Kinsa may makbadlong? Ang among mga guards wa na pud maka-duty karon,” he said.

Jeffrey Villarta, the last security guard on-duty, said he no longer report for work after working on a 24-hour shift for the last seven days.

He said other guards failed to report for work due to lockdown.

Moreover, Badana said drug addicts in the area might use the school as a hideout.

“Kanang sa luyo sa among eskwelahan, naa gyud na dihay mang-gi-drugs. Basi manulod nas eskwelahan dayon adto manglayat unya? Maong mas maayo untag naa gyuy police sa atubangan, sa sulod, ug sa likod. Asa kaha na sila (residents) mopatuo og tanod lang?” said Badana.   KQD (FREEMAN)
