Battle of Mactan” marked sans fanfare
CEBU, Philippines — The city officials, led by Mayor Junard Chan, did the floral offering shortly after the flag-raising ceremony with strict observance of the social distancing protocol. The officials also picked flowers from their own backyards and from the Shangrila Garden since there are no flower shops available to supply the needs.
In his message, Chan said the people should be inspired by the bravery of DatuLapu-Lapu in winning the fight against the invaders. As humanity faces the threat of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) which has already killed thousands of people and infected millions around theworld, Chan rallied the public to unite against the unseen enemy.
"In behalf of the Lapu-Lapu City government, nangayoakoogdespensasaatongbayaniugsatanangOponganonsa simple langngaselebrasyonngaatonggi-andam para samakasaysayongadlawkaron di samasamganangagingkatuigan,” Chan said.

Lapu-Lapu City Lone District Rep. Paz C. Radaza expressed sadness that the first Filipino hero is not given the glamorous and festive celebration it deserves because of the COVID-19.
"Yes, Covid-19 may have crippled and stripped us off of the pomp and glitz. However, the same will never waver our tribute, gratitude, and admiration of Lapu-Lapu, and our dear promise to perpetuate his heroism,” Radaza said.
She encouraged all residents of the city to help fight the disease by observing the protocols for their own protection and the whole community.
