City of Naga to get P3 million 1 year after devastating landslide

Lorraine Ecarma - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Province of Cebu will finally hand over financial aid to the City of Naga one year after the landslide that killed 70 people.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia is set to officially turn over the check for P3 million to acting Naga City Mayor Kristina Vanessa Chiong.

Initially, the financial aid supposed to be given to the city was only P1 million in the months following the landslide that took 70 lives and displaced 444 families.

It was not until the meeting with Governor Gwendolyn Garcia when suspended Naga Mayor Val Chiong was able to remind the Province of Cebu of the aid it promised to give the calamity-stricken city

According to Mayor Chiong, the Naga City government will spend over P30 million from its coffers for the relocation of a school in Barangay Cantao-an which was discovered to be sitting on a danger zone.

This is why he also requested that the province add to the P1 million financial aid.

Acting Mayor Chiong revealed that the financial subsidy from the province will be used as additional funding for the 50 houses to be built by the city for the families affected by the Naga landslide.

"We already agreed with Governor Gwen and Mayor Val to have the P3 million applied for the site development of the city-funded housing project --sa ilang drainage and etc.," she said.

She added that she plans on inviting the governor to the September 20 Mass to be celebrated by the City of Naga to mark one year since the Naga landslide.

Naga hopes that the Cebu provincial government will turn over the long-overdue check by then. — BRP (FREEMAN)
