Top 100 Cebuano Personalities: Buenaventura Rodriguez

CEBU, Philippines — Buenaventura Rodriguez is one of the most looked up to literary personalities in Cebu. He came from a prominent clan in Bogo City, north of Cebu.

He served as provincial board member and congressman of Cebu’s seventh district. He became the first elected governor during the Commonwealth.

He was also the first governor to occupy the brand new Cebu Provincial Capitol building, which was inaugurated on June 14, 1938 in grand ceremonies attended by President Manuel Quezon and Vice President Sergio Osmeña.

Rodriguez died in office while campaigning for reelection in 1940. It happened a few hours before the opening of polls. (FREEMAN)
