CEBU, Philippines — Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma has again appealed to the people to pray and meditate for the election of candidates who will serve both the community and the country.

Palma said the election is an occasion to show the importance of the vote, which should compel the people to pause and pray in order to choose a proper and fitting candidate to preside over the reins of government.

“Not because we fear, not because we are bought, not because of any other reason but this is our prayer for discernment of those who could benefit are put on the ballot," Palma said.

Palma is also praying for a peaceful election and for everyone to respect the value of life.

The prelate yesterday left for Hungary for an “exchange of notes” in relation to the city’s hosting of the International Eucharistic Congress in 2016.  Next year, Hungary will host the event.

Palma disclosed that he would return a day before the elections, so he can cast his vote at the City Central Elementary School.

Yesterday, the Inter-faith Convergence for Peace in Our Elections was held at the Archbishop’s Palace attended by various religious institutions.

Every religious organization has shared some principles and techniques to help the people in selecting the candidate who deserves to lead the government.

After the meeting, the leaders of various religious groups gathered for a candle lighting as they read their statement “Let Our People Will Come to Light.”

"Let us take our faith and citizenship beyond May 13. Live out your faith and citizenship. This is an everyday act, be mindful of your actions. Participate in local governance, create the community that mirrors your values and aspirations. Allow God to act through you in the continuing work of creation," read a portion of the statement.
