CEBU, Philippines — At least 421 inmates from Naga-Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (Naga-BJMP) were transferred to the new Cebu City Jail Female Dormitory in Barangay Kalunasan last Friday.
The inmates from the City of Naga will be staying for six months while BJMP is doing slope stabilization at the back of the Naga jail facility in Barangay Naalad.
Cebu City Councilor David Tumulak, chairman on public order and safety, said the government of the City of Naga will help the city government pay for the electricity and water bills.
“Gi-reiterate sa bag-ong regional director nga naa’y additional security ngadto sa jail facility and hopefully BJMP can also support in terms of power and water as long as naa gyu’y mobantay sa peace and order nila,” Tumulak said.
The Cebu City government accommodated the inmates upon the request of Naga City Mayor Kristine Vanessa Chiong.
Naga City government sees the necessity to transfer the inmates after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) issued Geohazard Assessment and Investigation Report following the landslide incident in Barangay Tinaan and it’s recommended that slope stabilization measures shall be implemented.
Last Wednesday, Gonzalodo Construction, the contractor of the new female dormitory has completed the construction of the new four-storey building.
To recall, in April 2018, the contractor started the construction of the new facility which was funded by the national government.
The BJMP and Cebu City Government agreed to establish an additional building to decongest the old facility which can accommodate 200 inmates only.
Tumulak said the new facility for law offenders is a “power-saving” building.
“One, it’s well-ventilated, second is power energy saving facility siya kay ang sunlight didto mahayag naman siya, no need naman siya electrical bulbs or fluorescent bulbs. Naa gihapon but maka save gyud siya kay lusot-lusot naman ang hayag niya well-ventilated na siya,” he said. — MBG (FREEMAN)
